PyeongChang 2018 Cultural Olympiad

  • Cultural Olympiad is a realisation of Olympic values through various cultural, entertainment, and experiential activities as well as festivals to bring people around the world together.
  • Previous Cultural Olympiad have boosted Olympic values and delivered an impression to spectators for the Olympic Games, consisting of various programmes under the theme of CODE (2010), cultural and art grand festivals (2012), a themed programme on culture introduction in Russia (2014), and an introduction of a variety of culture in Brazil (2016).
  • The 2018 PyeongChang Cultural Olympiad will be held with the aim of realizing “Every Day, Culture and Festival!,” and creates “New Horizons” and plays an enormous role in bridging regions where no winter sports exist through winter sports with new and various programmes.
The PyeongChang 2018 Cultural Olympiad is to be mainly held at PyeongChang Olympic Plaza and Gangneung Olympic Park, and parts of the Host City for audience to enjoy various forms of entertainment during the 2018 Winter Games.

PyeongChang Olympic Plaza

Platform of cultural convergence and combination where people can experience and enjoy Korea’s iconic culture and art (media art, contemporary and modern art) as well as cutting-edge technology
Exhibitions/Performances : Paik Nam June Media art exhibition, contemporary and modern era art exhibition, small cultural performance, ICT experience, etc.
Outer Wall : Media pasade, robot wall printing drawing demonstration
To provide with Korean traditional architecture, culture, and essence of Korean Culture, enabling people to feast on the Korean culture themes
Indoor demonstrations/performances, traditional culture experience, outdoor performances : Cultural Artisan Programme (demonstration of traditional artful skills and performance of intangible cultural assets) and regular/special exhibitions about traditional culture experience, outdoor performances (performances such as Tal dance, etc., of intangible cultural assets), experience of tolling a bell, etc.
To provide a space for open-air games screening, cheering competition (10:00~16:00), victory Ceremonies for medalists, colorful performances and fireworks shows (18:00~22:00) to celebrate them.

There are various cultural programmes including a 3D Hologram Concert, Live Winter Sports VR Experience provided at the Live Pavilion, Public Art Project, 2018PyeongChang and traditional culture lanterns exhibition etc.

Gangneung Olympic Park

Provide attractions and entertainment for the moving and waiting spectators in Olympic Park. Street performances such as Parade, Street Dance, Busking, Korean Traditional performance, etc.
To provide a space that inspires cultural aspects throughout various type of traditional performance.
To provide a place for open-air games screening and cheering competition, stage performance, Winter Games experience activities on an ice rink, cultural exhibitions, partner showcase
On-screen broadcasting, large-scale performances, VR / winter sports experience, etc.
Various cultural programmes and festivals held everyday, including the busking performances and exhibition of art works with PyeongChang 2018 Winter Games themes help to create a Cultural Olympiad.

PyeongChang 2018 Pre-Games Cultural Programmes

Pre-Games cultural programmes are held to promote the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Games and create boom-up by increasing participation from local citizens and partners. Programmes are filled with Olympic and Paralympic-related events and performances that connect sports and culture.

G*-3 years cultural event (9 Feb 2014), G-1000 days cultural event (16-17 May 2015), Year-end cultural event (26-30 Dec 2015), G-2 years cultural event (27 Feb 2016), G-500 days cultural event (27 Sep 2016), G-1 year cultural event (9 Feb 2017), G-200 days cultural event (9 Sep 2017) were held in co-operation with the government, host cities and sponsors in Seoul, PyeongChang and Gangneung, for everyone in Korea, including local citizens and foreign tourists to enjoy!

On G-100 (1 Nov 2017), various programmes will be held in order to celebrate the torch arrival, start of the Torch Relay in Korea, and to build excitement leading up to the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Games.
