Seongyojang is the best-preserved scholar-official’s house from the Joseon Dynasty in Gangwon province. It is located about 4 kilometres away from Gangneung towards Gyeongpo. It is a typical upper-class residence with 99 rooms, and it was nationally designated as Important Folklore Material No. 5 in 1965. Under Yeongjo’s rule during the Joseon Dynasty in 1703, Nae-beon Lee, Prince Hyoryeong’s descendant, discovered this auspicious site by chance while chasing after a group of weasels and decided to build this house. His descendants still reside in Seongyojang today. In the year 2000, KBS (Korea Broadcasting System) selected this residence as one of Korea’s Top 10 traditional houses of the 20th century.
