Sustainability Management

The PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games(POCOG) wants to make a step forward in terms of sustainability standards and performance levels that have been demonstrated in the previous Olympic Games and international sporting events in all stages of activities from preparation, and hosting of the events to post-Games management.In order to ensure systemic implementation of sustainability and to raise awareness of participants on sustainability in all phases of activities such as preparation of the Olympic Games, hosting of the events, and post management, the International Standard for Event Sustainability Management(ISO20121:2012) is applied to the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Principles for Sustainability Management

PyeongChang Sustainability shall be managed based on the following principles

Stewardship, Inclusivity, Integrity, Transparency Diagram
Stewardship
In order to achieve sustainability, POCOG is responsible for sharing its goals with the government, local governing bodies and its stakeholders and executing the details accordingly.
Inclusivity
In order to discover and resolve sustainability issues, POCOG makes every effort to involve internal and external stakeholders and cooperate with them.
Integrity
Following its strict moral compass, POCOG shall operate in an honest and trustworthy manner to meet international standards when working to achieve sustainability.
Transparency
In its decision-making process and relevant activities for achieving sustainability, POCOG is committed to clarity, preciseness, and transparency.

Sustainability Management Policy

The PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games aims to achieve sustainability vision 'Creating a New Horizon for Sustainable PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games : Furthering Benefits to Human and Nature' through the entire process of Games preparations, operation, and post-Games management.
Sustainable development in all pillars of environment, society and economy is pursued, and POCOG exerts its upmost efforts to create tangible and intangible Olympic Legacy. To achieve this mission, the following sustainability management policy came to be established.

  • 1POCOG establishes goals and action plans to achieve Olympic Games principles, objectives, values and policy.
  • 2POCOG abides by both Korean and international laws and regulations on the operation of the Games.
  • 3POCOG applies sustainable management policy to the organisations, tasks and facilities involved in the Games management and operation.
  • 4POCOG fulfills its environmental, economic and social responsibilities through continual improvement the Games operation.
  • 5POCOG unfolds proactive efforts to accomplish low carbon green Olympic Games with the sense of responsibility for environment.
  • 6POCOG strives for lasting development of the local community through activation of local economy and regional integration.
  • 7POCOG enables PyeongChang 2018 to contribute to the promotion of Olympism through winter sports.

PyeongChang Sustainability Management Main Activities

POCOG has established sustainability management system to strike a balance in aspects such as the environment, economic and social development and ultimately contribute to sustainable development.
The PyeongChang sustainability management system is developed to achieve PyeongChang sustainability management goals through continuous improvement activities based on the framework of Plan-Do-Check-Act.
